On Lake of the Woods, you have easy access to Minnesota and Ontario waters. Each boasting its own benefits – Minnesota waters offer larger walleye fishing, but the water is not sheltered. There is a limit of four walleyes per day, along with a limit on the bass/musky fishing. However, there are no bait/alcohol restrictions. On Ontario waters, the waters are more sheltered.
In our part of the lake, the islands are not developed, in fact, 99% of them are public land. Although both bodies of water offer different fishing experiences, we feel people are missing out if they do not buy an Ontario license. Until you experience it for yourself, crossing the border to drive to the Angle or to fish in Ontario, it can seem daunting. Don’t worry; we will explain how to do it.
A client of ours from Manitoba said it best when they changed their annual fishing trip (a 5-hour drive north of Winnipeg and then a float plane ride to the cabin) for a trip to our place. While checking out, we asked him what he thought of his vacation. He said, “I don’t know what we’ve been doing! I can come here and fish three times in a season for the price of one trip up there, and for me it’s only a 3 hour drive to Jake’s. The accommodations were better, and the fishing was every bit as good.”
The following chart is a general rule of thumb suggesting best times for the average independent fisherman.
Walleye | Muskie | Smallmouth | Northern | Crappie | |
May | good | n/a | good | best | best |
June | best | good | best | best | best |
July | best | best | good | good | tough |
August | good | good | tough | tough | tough |
September | best | best | tough | good | good |
